If you buy into the rumors, you might have heard reports that Apple is apparently looking to launch a VR headset next year. We know that there have been rumors about a pair of AR glasses, but apparently Apple wants to launch a VR headset first. Now thanks to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, details about the alleged VR headset have surfaced.
Based on what Kuo is saying, it seems that Apple’s VR headset could feature sophisticated eye tracking. This means that instead of having to rely on a handheld controller to point at objects in VR, the headset will apparently be capable of telling where you’re looking at based on your eye movement.
Some of the possibilities of this system include efficiency of the headset, where it might prioritize rendering areas that the user’s eyes are looking at instead of the entire world. This could help deliver the best possible experience without taxing system. This eye tracking system will also apparently feature iris recognition which could be used to authenticate the user for certain tasks or activities.
This report is actually rather interesting because Apple has mostly positioned themselves as a champion of AR, not necessarily VR, so for the company to launch a VR headset first is odd. However, Kuo’s track record has been pretty good so while we caution against taking his claims as the truth, it does make us feel a bit more confident.
