Qualcomm is a company many of us are familiar with when it comes to mobile chipsets, but it seems that the company could be planning on moving into other product categories. According to a report from Android Police, they have heard from their sources that apparently Qualcomm wants to design its own gaming console.

This console is said to bear a strong resemblance to the Nintendo Switch, with the main difference being that it is powered by Android. It will also be used to showcase Qualcomm’s chipsets and its performance in a non-smartphone form factor, which could then be used to sell the company’s products and appeal to different markets beyond mobile.

This isn’t such a ludicrous idea when you think about it. The Switch is powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra chipset which like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon series, is also based on the ARM architecture. In theory (and in some demos we’ve seen), in its current form it would be able to run on Android, so for Qualcomm to create a console that fully supports Android wouldn’t be that much of a stretch.

That being said, while it is a feasible idea, is it a good one? We have seen some Android-based consoles launch in the past without much success, plus our phones are already more than capable, why would we need to buy a new device? Either way, nothing has been confirmed yet so maybe take this with a pinch of salt for now.
