Snap Could Be Working On A Pair Of Augmented Reality Glasses

When it comes to wearables, Snap is no stranger to that scene. The company has released a couple iterations of its Spectacles to date, but it looks like the company wants to expand and take things to the next level. This is according to a report from The Information (paywall) who claims that Snap is apparently looking to launch a pair of augmented reality (AR) glasses.
For those unfamiliar, Snap’s Spectacle’s aren’t AR. They aren’t necessarily “smart” either. Instead they’re glasses that come with a camera built into them that allows users to capture photos and videos and then overlay AR content on it through the app. However, this report claims that Snap’s next attempt could result in “true” AR glasses, where users will be able to see AR content through the lenses itself.
The report goes on to add that this device is said to be aimed more towards developers and creators rather than the end-user. The idea is that developers and creators can use the tech to create Snapchat Lenses that can then be used by the end-user in the future. Interestingly enough, this is an approach that Apple is said to be taking with their rumored mixed reality headset.
Also, this report comes at an interesting time because it was just the other day that Niantic seemed to tease their very own AR glasses. If this report is to be believed, it looks like the market is about to get a lot more crowded with AR-based wearables in the near future.
