There have been rumors suggesting that Google could be working on a Pixel 5a 5G handset, and now it looks like those rumors have been confirmed at Google has officially announced the handset, although they did it in the most unfun way possible and without any fanfare, although we suppose they can’t be blamed.

You see, earlier there were rumors from both Android Central and Jon Prosser who claimed that due to the global chip shortage, Google has ultimately decided to cancel the Pixel 5a 5G. To refute those rumors, Google decided to just come forward to announce the handset and to refute the rumors at the same time.

According to a Google spokesperson, “Pixel 5a 5G is not cancelled. It will be available later this year in the U.S. and Japan and announced in line with when last year’s a-series phone was introduced.” The company did not mention any specs or features of the Pixel 5a 5G yet, so we imagine that will most likely happen later, possibly during I/O 2021 which is scheduled for May.

Either way, with this announcement, if you were looking forward to a new Pixel smartphone that’s affordable, you might want to wait for the launch of the Pixel 5a 5G, unless you live outside of the US or Japan.
