If you’ve ever been to a hotel in the past few years, you might have noticed how some hotels have been upgraded to become “smarter”. This can come in the form of features like tablets, where guests can use the tablet to control various appliances like the lights, play music, set an alarm, control the curtains, and more.

However, if that wasn’t enough, Google is hoping to make hotels even smarter. In an announcement by Guest Supply and Volara, they have announced that they will be teaming up with Google in the US for “Google for Hotels”. What this means is that we can expect participating hotels to feature hardware like the Google Nest Hub, which in turn will allow guests to control various aspects of the room using their voice.

According to the announcement, “With the simple voice command ‘Hey Google’ guests can set a wakeup alarm, speak with the front desk, get a recommendation, or request an item be brought to their room.” Guests can also use the feature to ask for information about the weather, areas of attraction, where to eat, and more.

It sounds rather interesting, although we have to wonder how some guests might feel about having a smart speaker in their room. There are some who avoid such devices in their own homes over privacy concerns, so whether or not these devices are crucial to the room’s operation is unclear, and whether or not guests can remove them without any issues.
