IBM Unveils The World’s First 2nm Chip
[ad_1]
Chip technology has been improving over the years, where we’re seeing handsets like the iPhone 12 feature chipsets built on the 5nm process. In fact, some believe that in 2022, Apple could launch mobile devices that have chipsets built on the even smaller 3nm process, but for now, it seems that IBM has everyone beat.
The company has recently announced that they are the first in the world to make a chip based on the 2nm process. According to IBM, they have managed to cram as many as 50 billion transistors onto a chip the size of a fingernail. If that wasn’t impressive enough, the performance and energy efficiency could change your mind.
IBM says that their 2nm chips are capable of delivering 45% increase performance boost using the same power as 7nm chips, or outputting similar levels of performance but at the same time consuming 75% less energy. The company believes that this could ultimately result in mobile devices that could last up to four days on a single charge due to the energy efficiency of the chip.
It can also be applied to laptops and even self-driving vehicles, which will be able to detect objects and people faster and will also have better reaction times. It is unclear when we will actually be able to see 2nm chips make their way into consumer devices, but it is without doubt good progress.
