Apple’s AirPods have been around for a while now and apart from the introduction of the higher-end AirPods Pro, the AirPods is still stuck in the second-gen which was released back in 2019. We imagine that consumers probably want something new and exciting and might be holding back, which is why it doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that Apple could be ramping down production.

According to a report from Nikkei Asia, they claim that Apple is apparently planning to scale back production of the AirPods this year by 25-30%. This means that the total number of units the company plans to produce will be around 75-85 million, down from the 110 million units that was previously forecast.

The ramping down shouldn’t necessarily be seen as a sign that sales are bad, but rather it could be that customers are simply waiting for the next-gen model. Last we heard, the third-gen AirPods could be launching in the second half of the year, so it is possible that we might learn more about it at Apple’s iPhone event, also scheduled for the second half of 2021.

That being said, while maybe a bit “boring” now given that they’re two years old, the AirPods are appealing to iOS users due to their ease of pairing with iPhones and iPads, which is why they were so popular to begin with despite people making fun of the design and price tag.
