Face ID is an amazing piece of technology, but it has its flaws, such as users having to look at the phone to unlock it, whereas Touch ID is more flexible in that regard. The good news is that it looks like we are hearing more reports that Touch ID will indeed be making a return to the next-gen iPhone which is expected to launch later this year.

This is according to Barclays analyst Andrew Gardiner and his colleagues who write in a research note seen by MacRumors that it is “likely” that an in-display Touch ID will make an appearance in 2021’s iPhone. We have been hearing these rumors for a while now and while hearing multiple reports doesn’t necessarily make it true, at the very least it makes it consistent and they all seem to corroborate each other’s claims.

It is unclear why Apple has taken this long to implement an in-display fingerprint sensor. Other handset makers have already implemented them for years now, so it’s not as if the technology isn’t available. It is possible that in true Apple fashion, they might have been trying to create something themselves that’s unique to them which is why its implementation has taken so long.

Either way, since Apple hasn’t confirmed anything yet, it’s probably best to approach this report with a dash of skepticism, but if you’re a Touch ID fan and would love to see its return to the iPhone, it’s starting to feel like your wish could come true this year.
