The problem with online dating is that a lot of the time, you don’t know if the person you’re speaking to is who they say they are. This is because it is incredibly easy to use a photo belonging to someone else or put things in your profile that simply aren’t true, which is why it’s always a good idea to be wary.

However, if you use Tinder, you might be able to get some extra form of assurance because the company that owns the app, the Match Group, has announced that they will be investing in Garbo, a nonprofit organization that helps people run background checks on others using their first name and a phone number.

This means that Tinder users will be able to run a basic background check on a potential date. Garbo will pull from publicly available sources, like reports of any criminal activity like violence or abuse related incidences, arrests, restraining orders, and so on. This will help users make more informed decisions for themselves, and whether or not they want to proceed with the date.

This service won’t be offered free of charge and Tinder is expected to sell the service, but as it stands it is unclear how much it will cost and whether or not it will be offered a la carte or if it will be included in Tinder’s subscription plans.
