Apple’s iPhones have been rated with a certain degree of water-resistance, but the keyword here is “resistance” as opposed to being waterproof. This means that the iPhones have been rated to withstand water immersion for a certain length of time and only at certain depths, but it has been proven time and time again that these ratings are extremely conservative.

This is because according to a recent report, a woman by the name of Angie Carriere decided that after losing her iPhone 11 Pro in the frigid waters of Waskesiu Lake, she would try her luck at attempting to retrieve it a month later, and the best part is that not only was she successful, but the phone was working.

Carriere was celebrating her 50th birthday with some ice fishing when a gust of wind blew her tent up, causing her to drop her phone into the lake. At this point many of us would have given up, which is what Carriere did at the start, but she later decided to try her luck because she really wanted to get her photos back.

Together with the help of her friends, she returned to the location and with a fish finder, managed to locate the iPhone and coupled with a strong magnet, she pulled it out of the water where she discovered that it managed to turn on an was fully functional. Obviously we don’t recommend people dunking their iPhones in the water (neither does Apple), but the takeaway here is that maybe don’t lose hope if your phone ever gets fully submerged.
